Mer De Noms is the debut album by A Perfect Circle. Just before Tool went on a hiatus, former Tool guitar tech Billy Howerdel showed Maynard demos of his own written music. Maynard immediately offered himself as a vocalist for the band, and Howerdel eventually accepted. Thus, the band formed, pulling in various members from other bands. Maynard explores a more melancholic way of singing than the metal Tool produced on Aenima. Later, his evolution in singing showed itself in Lateralus, but this album is the birthplace of the evolution. Fans of Deep Forest tend to chart the release of their albums in an almost bell curve like shape. The core of Deep Forest has been electronic instrumentation, combined with looped rhythm samples and vocal samples from a variety of cultures. These core elements have been fundamentally reworked in "Music Detected". The opening track, "India", features sitar and the distinctive vocal stylings of South Indian female vocal, courtesy of Mahalakshmi Iyer. With the assault of an air guitar and Indian classical music, "India" evokes images of that silicon valley of the subcontinent. The rest of the album has less specific musical roots, they emphasize the rock and techno elements in their music, but their sound is still unmistakable. On several cuts, Deep Forest adds electric guitar and drums, which give the album a heavier feel.. "Yuki's Song," which features Beverly Jo Scott in full force, is actually a very powerful vocal indulgence. Ænima is the second studio album by progressive metal band Tool. It was certified triple platinum by the RIAA on March 4, 2003. Themes of the album include Egyptian mythology in a seven-pointed star symbolizing Babylon, and sacred geometry in dividing the planet into grids related to chromosomes. The band dedicated the album to Bill Hicks (a comedian who the band felt was going in the same direction as them) and claimed this album to be partly inspired by him. The band's use of serpentine, syncopated rhythms, and tight staccato guitar riffs topped by singer Maynard James Keenan's passionate-but-controlled vocal style separates Tool from the slash-and-burn overkill approach of so many of their heavy rock contemporaries. The lyrics on Adema are a bit retrospective ; focusing on personal addictions and in the end, positive thinking. The motivation on this album points toward reaching out to kids that may be a bit different but in one way or another are all connected. Adema is a bit contrived and stereotypical in the hard rock / metal world. Think of Adema as a "Korn" for the masses. Lateralus is a message about transcendence of the soul. Even if this may not be the real interpretation, to listen to this album in its entirety is to discover something mysterious within it that compells you. It is arguably the best Tool album and flows like few albums can. The deviation from traditional rock rhythms makes the music less accessible. Lateralus is an album for musicians and fans of the band. I recommend it as Tool's finest work. Click on a track from the tracklist to download a song, or download "Tool - Lateralus" album here.
Exceedingly forceful, muscular, aggressive, and punishing (often brutally), this metalcore album abuse the listener's eardrums from beginning to end. With "Slayer"-inspired thrash riffs and foundation-shaking rhythms, it seems Caliban had so much confidence in their own potential (and big-budget record label). Mauro Picotto produced great tunes with a thumping bassline, and mellow break downs for this "Trance" album. "The Lizard", "Komodo", "Proximus", and "Like This Like That", which feature insanely catchy hooks sure to stick in one's head for weeks. Since he has made these tunes, he has gone into a new way of making music. Listen to "Baguette" and "Pegasus", these are two of his hardest tunes to date. But if you like his melodic breakdowns, it is doubtful you will like these. Click on a track from the tracklist to download a song, or download "Mauro Picotto - The Album" album here.
A product of ex Anathema's Duncan Patterson, he and Mick Moss have together made some of the deepest darkest most intriguing music I've ever heard, it's not metal or anything, more like their brand of darkwave. Technical yet minimalist it's a mix of some nice string work (acoustic, violin), with clever use of synth, programming, keyboards and excellent vocal work from Mick Moss and guests such as Michelle Richfield (Ex-Dominion). Here you will find some excellent sound-scapes and some haunting melodies heaped with atmosphere and nice vocal arrangements. The album starts with spine-tingling synth-swathes and brooding sub-bass, it's clear that "Outrospective" plays to Faithless' strengths. The band has always been more than just a dance act. Faithless practice in all areas of modern music, they have affecting textures, seductive atmospheres and haunting melodrama, with dance culture as a back-drop, that's their real forte. First single "We Come 1" is the safe banker, combining Rollo's unnerving soundscapes, Sister Bliss' dancefloor mentality and rapper Maxi Jazz's deadpan voice to recall the power of previous best "Insomnia". There's also a marginal upping of optimism with the gorgeous "One Step Too Far" (with the inevitable appearance of Rollo's sister "Dido"). "Tarantula", also represents an upping of bpm that reasserts their club relevance. Click on a track from the tracklist to download a song, or download "Faithless - Outrospective" album here.
Michael Cretu, the man behind Enigma, formulates an intriguing symbiosis between New Age musicality, classical and world-music influences, and dance-club rhythms. "The Screen Behind The Mirror" marks Enigma's continued foray into the ambient New Age realm, as Cretu's efforts focus more and more on melding compatible styles of world music, while the tracks are mixed into a single continuum. There's a lot to chew on; bits and pieces of church bells, Middle Eastern singing, and native instrumentation from you-name-it fold into each other on a steady current of shuffling hip-hop rhythms and velvety synthesized melodies. Cretu lends vocals to several songs on this album. Click on a track from the tracklist to download a song, or download "Enigma - The Screen Behind The Mirror" album here.
Mnemic(which stands for Mainly Neurotic Energy Modifying Instant Creation)have shared the stage with bands such as Darkane, Mystic Prophecy, Disbelief, Machine Head and Death Angel. "Passenger" is Mnemic's third full-length album and the band's most consistent and focused work to date. "Passenger" is conceptually based upon the philosophy of existentialism. The word that describe this album is psychotic. Click on a track from the tracklist to download a song, or download "Mnemic - Passenger" album here.
"Leaving Eden" is a psychedelic and blissfull follow up to the earliest albums of Antimatter. It is almost a one man show since Duncan Patterson left the band. But this album is as melancholic and ambient as the other albums of Antimatter. "Leaving Eden" features the guest appearance of Danny Cavanagh from Anathema in lead guitars and piano. "Leaving Eden" has endearing vocals and acoustic based tracks. The many guitar solos, extensive use of acoustic guitars and atmospheric riffs on "Leaving Eden" leaves a sense of melancholy in the atmosphere while listening to the album. The piano and violin achieve to raise the emotions of the listener. "Leaving Eden" is one of those albums whose greatness is revealed by listening to it as a whole from the beginning to the end, making it difficult to choose some special moments individually. Suggested to melancholic/dark music fans and especially those who favor bands such as Anathema and Pink Floyd. Flaw is a unique band in the nu-metal genre. Flaw catched my attention since the first time I ever listen to them. Chriz Volz voice is just incredible. Though Flaw is a nu-metal band, this album has its own sound, sometimes heavy and sometimes melodic served with very profound and personal lyrics which made this band some-kind of unique. The tracks on this album are very heavy and creative. The song I like the most from this album is "Get Up Again". Flaw proves with this album that nu-metal can be used as a solid foundation for dynamic music. Their songs find a perfect equilibrium between melody and aggression. Anathema is one of the most creative bands I know. "A Natural Disaster" is more ambient and atmospheric compared to the earlier albums of this once Doom-Metal Band. The band completely shed themselves of their goth roots, while still putting out powerful, brooding hard rock. On this album they sound remarkably like Pink Floyd and sometimes Radiohead. There is a certain haunting, atmospheric quality to "A Natural Disaster" that is utterly enchanting and makes "A Natural Disaster" a chill-out record of sorts for metalhead.
